Low vitamin D linked to higher pain after breast cancer surgery

Women with vitamin D deficiency face significantly more pain and greater opioid use following breast cancer surgery, according to new research. The study found deficient patients were three times more likely to experience moderate to severe discomfort in the first day after mastectomy.

Researchers at Fayoum University Hospital in Egypt tracked 184 women preparing for unilateral modified radical mastectomy. The prospective observational study ran from September 2024 through April 2025. Half the participants had vitamin D levels below 30 nmol/L, while the rest had adequate levels. Medical staff were blinded to the results during care.
