Low vitamin D linked to higher pain after breast cancer surgery

Women with vitamin D deficiency face significantly more pain and greater opioid use following breast cancer surgery, according to new research. The study found deficient patients were three times more likely to experience moderate to severe discomfort in the first day after mastectomy.

Researchers at Fayoum University Hospital in Egypt tracked 184 women preparing for unilateral modified radical mastectomy. The prospective observational study ran from September 2024 through April 2025. Half the participants had vitamin D levels below 30 nmol/L, while the rest had adequate levels. Medical staff were blinded to the results during care.

A study published in the journal *Bone Research* reports that parathyroid hormone (PTH) reduced pain-related behaviors in mouse models of spinal degeneration, apparently by strengthening vertebral endplates and triggering bone-cell signals that repel pain-sensing nerve fibers. The work was led by Dr. Janet L. Crane of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

A major randomized trial led by Mass General Brigham found that a four-week course of high-dose vitamin D3 started soon after a positive COVID-19 test did not reduce acute illness severity, healthcare visits or deaths, and did not curb household spread. But in an analysis limited to participants who consistently took the assigned pills, researchers observed a small, borderline statistically significant difference in lingering symptoms reported eight weeks after infection, a finding they say warrants further study.

A new study has found that adults with higher vitamin D levels in their 30s and 40s tend to have lower levels of tau protein in their brains about 16 years later. Tau is a key biomarker associated with dementia. The research, published this week, highlights a potential modifiable risk factor for brain health.

Women who frequently sought care before the pandemic faced a much higher risk of postcovid. A new study from Sahlgrenska Academy examined visits by 200,000 Swedish women to primary care.

A 59-year-old woman achieved remission from a cancerous arm tumor without further treatment after a diagnostic biopsy. The procedure appears to have sparked an immune response that eliminated the myxofibrosarcoma within weeks. This marks one of only nine known similar cases.
