Nathan Peru, who was later shot and killed by officers while awaiting trial, left his daughter alone in the bath at their Tucson home to grab nicotine pouches from a car. He told investigators he filled the tub using the showerhead and stepped outside for about five minutes, according to a criminal complaint obtained by the Arizona Daily Star. Peru claimed he heard a thump and found the child face down upon returning inside.
