Sánchez awards UN rapporteur Francesca Albanese for her work on Gaza

President Pedro Sánchez today awarded the Order of Civil Merit to Francesca Albanese at the Moncloa Palace for documenting violations of international law.

The ceremony took place this Thursday. Sánchez and Albanese reviewed the situation in Palestine and the need for an immediate end to the violence.

The day before, the head of government sent a letter to the European Commission. He requested activation of the Blocking Statute to nullify US sanctions against Albanese and against judges and prosecutors of the International Criminal Court.

“Spain does not look the other way. Sanctioning those who defend international justice puts the entire human rights system at risk,” Sánchez stated on social media.

Albanese, who is visiting Spain and has met with several ministers, thanked the government for its support against sanctions from the Trump administration.
