Southern Railway plans to add another parking yard at Perungudi railway station due to rising commuter numbers and full utilization of existing space.
The Southern Railway has planned to add another parking yard at the Perungudi railway station of the Mass Rapid Transit System as the present parking space is being fully utilised. With the MRTS services being extended from Velachery to the St. Thomas Mount railway station, there has been a rise in commuters using the service. The Perungudi station, one of the gateways to the Information Technology corridor, has similarly seen an increase in vehicles using its parking space. A senior official of the Southern Railway said an additional space adjacent to the present parking yard, which is illegally occupied by commercial vehicles, will be developed, for which a tender will be called soon. Monthly passes are available for the public and they are making use of them. Commuters who bring their own vehicles struggle to find a parking spot. S. Murali Sundar, a resident of Taramani who regularly boards the MRTS services at Perungudi station, said the parking yard is mostly full and regular commuters have to leave the vehicles unprotected outside the station.
