The Teachers' Service Commission has outlined plans to promote over 30,000 teachers by the close of 2026. Acting Chief Executive Officer Eveleen Mitei made the announcement on May 13, 2026, while addressing the National Assembly's Education Committee at Bunge Towers.
Mitei stated that the promotions will proceed once the National Treasury releases Ksh2 billion for the 2026/2027 financial year. She noted that the number of promotions will depend on teachers leaving service through retirement or other means. The committee, led by MP Julius Melly, urged faster action to address complaints about delays.
Separately, Mitei confirmed that 20,000 of the current 44,000 intern teachers will move to permanent and pensionable terms after completing their two-year internship in January 2027. She added that over 100,000 teachers have been recruited in the past three years with support from President William Ruto. Lawmakers also raised issues including unpaid Work Injury Benefits Act compensation and delays in teacher welfare programs.
