Sweden secures record-breaking winter olympic medal haul

Sweden finished seventh in the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics medal table with eight golds, six silvers and four bronzes, marking the country's best performance in Winter Games history. This total of 18 medals matches the 2022 Beijing haul but surpasses it in quality. The success was driven largely by female cross-country skiers and curling teams.

Sweden's athletes delivered an outstanding showing at the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, achieving a medal tally of eight golds, six silvers and four bronzes for a total of 18. This result placed the nation seventh overall, an improvement in medal quality over previous Winter Games, where Sweden ranked sixth in Pyeongchang 2018 and fifth in Beijing 2022. The Beijing Olympics also yielded 18 medals, but with eight golds, five silvers and five bronzes.

The medal haul represents Sweden's best ever at a Winter Olympics. The last time the country exceeded 18 medals was at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles with 19, and the most golds since 1952, when 12 were won at the Helsinki Summer Games.

Swedish Olympic Committee Chef de Mission Fredrik Joulamo praised the team, stating, "I am so proud of the squad and all the leaders. A very good confirmation that Swedish winter sports are of the highest international class."

Cross-country skiing dominated the golds, with women securing five. Frida Karlsson won the opening-day women's skiathlon. In the sprint classical, Linn Svahn took gold, with Jonna Sundling and Maja Dahlqvist earning silver and bronze for a podium sweep. Ebba Andersson claimed the inaugural women's 50km classical gold, awarded at the closing ceremony.

Joulamo noted, "Once again we see how a good start to the Olympics through the skiathlon medals has a positive effect on the entire squad's performance during the games. The Swedish cross-country team is the best in the world on the women's side."

Curling contributed two golds: siblings Isabella and Rasmus Wrana in mixed doubles, and Anna Hasselborg's women's team on the final day—their second Olympic gold in three Games. "The curling team has charmed Sweden and the world. It is a huge achievement to win two out of three possible gold medals in an Olympic tournament," Joulamo added.

In biathlon, Martin Ponsiluoma won the men's pursuit gold and bronze in the men's relay, while the women's relay earned silver. Alpine skiing saw Sara Hector's silver in women's giant slalom and Anna Swenn-Larsson's bronze in slalom. Sandra Naslund took bronze in women's ski-cross after injury recovery.

Joulamo highlighted the biathlon results as "gold, silver and bronze... close to being even better," and called the alpine medals "extra emotional." He described Naslund's return as "a success in itself."
