Network executives pushed for Orson Welles to play Mr. Roarke in the 1977 Fantasy Island television movie, but producer Aaron Spelling selected Ricardo Montalban instead.
Spelling recalled the casting disagreement in his 1996 memoir Aaron Spelling: A Prime-Time Life. He said ABC ordered the movie and immediately favored Welles, while the producer preferred Montalban for the character's tone.
In a 1999 interview with the Television Academy, Spelling noted that executives questioned the choice of Montalban and expressed concern over his heritage. Spelling defended the selection by emphasizing the actor's skill and the character's unspecified background.
Montalban ultimately portrayed Mr. Roarke 154 times across seven seasons of the series and its two originating movies. The show also featured Hervé Villechaize as Tattoo.
