dbrand has canceled its Companion Cube case for the Steam Machine after Valve objected to the unlicensed use of Portal intellectual property. The company received more than 100,000 pre-orders before halting sales last week.
dbrand launched the accessory without first obtaining a license from Valve. The product transformed the Steam Machine into a Companion Cube from the Portal game series.
The company admitted its error in a Reddit post. It stated that Valve declined to reach an agreement after being contacted following the product's launch.
Refunds for all pre-orders, including international shipping fees, were issued on June 29. dbrand acknowledged that Valve owns the rights to decide how its franchise is used.
