Valve has introduced playful design elements to its new Steam Machine console-like PC, including an LED strip that doubles as a download progress indicator and magnetically attached front plates that users can swap.
The $1,000-plus device brings Steam Deck functionality to living room TVs. Its front LED strip changes color and brightness by default and fills as a progress bar during downloads or updates.
Users can remove the front plate easily using magnets and replace it with alternatives such as a red fabric version or a wood veneer plate. Valve plans to release design documentation so owners with 3D printers can create custom plates.
Separately, accessory maker dbrand was forced to cancel its planned Companion Cube wrap for the Steam Machine after launching pre-orders on June 22 without a license from Valve. The company issued refunds and removed all promotional material following contact from Valve's legal team.
