The federal government has approved raising the capacity of Mexico City's International Airport (AICM) from 44 to 46 operations per hour starting winter 2026. The increase depends on the availability of three new taxiways on runway 05 right. This authorization reverses previous decrees by former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Mexico City's International Airport (AICM), operated by the Navy, stated that the aeronautical authority deemed the increase viable after reviewing a study by Servicios a la Navegación en el Espacio Aéreo Mexicano (SENEAM), in line with article 94 of the Airports Law Regulations.
The first rapid-exit taxiway is already complete, the second will finish in the second half of May, and the third by the end of 2026. The AICM specified that the measure is temporary for summer and winter 2026 periods, potentially applicable in future seasons. The resolution directs the concessionaire to implement measures ensuring optimal operations and public service.
This move by President Claudia Sheinbaum's government aims to restore capacity at the country's main airport. After issuing the statement, the AICM removed it on orders from its general directorate.
