Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said the government will seek public input before deciding on the future of childbirth incentives including the HK$20,000 newborn bonus that expires in October.
The bonus was introduced in 2023 as part of a broader shift toward actively encouraging childbirth. More than 65,000 babies have benefited so far, with over HK$1.3 billion paid out.
Lee told the South China Morning Post that officials would consult widely and collect public wisdom on whether to extend the measures. The policy package also covers higher tax allowances and expanded childcare services.
The comments come as the current incentive programme is set to end in October.
