The Miami Marlins defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-0 on Thursday afternoon at loanDepot park to complete a series sweep. Tyler Phillips and four relievers combined for the shutout as Miami extended its scoreless streak to 19 innings.
Phillips started and allowed just one hit through five-plus innings before manager Clayton McCullough turned to the bullpen. Michael Petersen, Anthony Bender, Calvin Faucher and closer Pete Fairbanks finished the game without allowing a run.
Miami improved to 34-35 and has won eight of its first nine games in June. The club has not trailed in the standings by more than one game since late April.
Marlins manager Clayton McCullough credited the pitching staff and depth after multiple rotation injuries. "We cut down the walks as a group, and I think we'll see more and more days and stretches like this," he said.
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo acknowledged the Marlins' performance. "They shut us down, totally shut us down," he said. Miami hosts Pittsburgh this weekend.
