The Second Environmental Tribunal clarified on Thursday its May 14 ruling that partially annulled the environmental qualification resolution for the project of Compañía Minera Doña Inés de Collahuasi.
The clarification establishes that the annulment is limited to the desalination plant and human environment aspects related to the indigenous claimant communities. The rest of the RCA remains in force, allowing the company to resume works in sectors such as Ductos, Cordillera and unchallenged parts of Puerto Collahuasi.
Collahuasi reported that construction and testing of the desalination plant have remained halted since the ruling, with only minimal maintenance and safety actions underway. The company expressed its willingness to comply swiftly with the decision to obtain full project authorization.
The project, originally approved in December 2021, aims to extend the mine’s useful life by 20 years with an investment close to US$3.2 billion. Anglo American and Glencore, which control the miner, reaffirmed that the environmental evaluation complied with current regulations.
