Court suspends regional decree aimed at blocking Valdecañas resort demolition

The Superior Court of Justice of Extremadura has suspended a decree from the regional government that sought to alter protected area boundaries to avoid demolition of the Marina Isla de Valdecañas luxury resort.

The court ruling, issued on June 9 2026, sided with Ecologistas en Acción and found the decree approved on December 16 lacked technical or environmental justification. The judges stated the measure could serve as a shortcut to resolve other issues and make it extremely difficult to enforce final court sentences. The Supreme Court ordered the complete demolition of the resort in 2022, which includes 185 luxury villas, a four-star hotel and a golf course. The Constitutional Court rejected related appeals at the end of 2025. The Junta de Extremadura has said it will appeal the suspension and maintains the decree only corrects outdated cartographic errors. Ecologistas en Acción lawyer Jaime Doreste called the move a clear fraud of law intended to rescue the complex.
