أعلنت منظمة الصحة العالمية أن تفشي سلالة "بونديبوجيو" من فيروس إيبولا في جمهورية الكونغو الديمقراطية وأوغندا يمثل حالة طوارئ صحية عامة. وتأتي هذه الخطوة في وقت يحث فيه الباحثون على تسريع تطوير لقاحات للسلالات الأقل شهرة من فيروس إيبولا.

تم إبلاغ منظمة الصحة العالمية بتفشي المرض في 5 مايو، وذلك بعد أن ظهرت على أحد العاملين في المجال الصحي أعراض شملت الحمى والنزيف والقيء والشعور العام بالإعياء في 24 أبريل. ومنذ ذلك الحين، تم تأكيد حالات إصابة في أوغندا أيضاً. ووفقاً للمراكز الأمريكية لمكافحة الأمراض والوقاية منها، فقد تم تسجيل 336 حالة يشتبه بإصابتها و88 حالة وفاة حتى 17 مايو. وتصل نسبة الوفيات الناجمة عن سلالة "بونديبوجيو" إلى ما بين 20 و50 بالمئة.
