Ebolautbrott klassat som ett internationellt hot mot människors hälsa i DR Kongo och Uganda

Världshälsoorganisationen (WHO) har utlyst ett internationellt hot mot människors hälsa till följd av ett utbrott av ebolavirusets Bundibugyo-stam i Demokratiska republiken Kongo och Uganda. Beslutet kommer i en tid då forskare kräver en snabbare utveckling av vaccin mot mindre kända ebolastammar.

WHO underrättades om utbrottet den 5 maj efter att en vårdanställd den 24 april uppvisat symptom såsom feber, blödningar, kräkningar och sjukdomskänsla. Fall har sedan dess även bekräftats i Uganda. Enligt amerikanska Centers for Disease Control and Prevention fanns det den 17 maj 336 misstänkta fall och 88 dödsfall. Bundibugyo-stammen har en dödlighet på 20 till 50 procent.
