Health Minister Aden Duale has urged Mosop MP Abraham Kirwa to formally file complaints against Nairobi Hospital and the doctor who treated him, leading to paralysis. The incident forced Kirwa to seek treatment abroad and miss parliamentary sessions for two years. Duale stated that the law permits such action during the Naivasha MPs conference.
During the Naivasha MPs Conference on Wednesday, Health Minister Aden Duale urged Mosop MP Abraham Kirwa to file formal complaints against Nairobi Hospital and the doctor who treated him. The malpractice incident caused Kirwa paralysis, forcing him to seek treatment abroad and miss parliamentary and public sessions for two years.
Duale noted that the law allows Kirwa to sue the hospital and doctor for negligence. “I hope you have filed complaints with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) because what happened is unacceptable,” Duale said. He added, “The problem is the doctor who did not give you appropriate medication and should not be left unpunished, as many Kenyans have lost lives due to such negligence.”
Kirwa confirmed he has not yet filed with KMPDC but will instruct his lawyer to do so. “What the doctor and Nairobi Hospital did to me is unacceptable,” Kirwa said. He questioned, “Why should I suffer because of their negligence? How many Kenyans die due to doctors' malpractice? If this can happen to an MP, what about an ordinary Kenyan?”
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula shared a personal story, saying his uncle died two years ago from a drunk doctor's poisonous treatment. Wetang’ula called for investigations into such cases and disciplinary actions against offending doctors.
Duale revealed incidents of fake doctors, such as one recently who caused a death by improperly extracting teeth; he was not Kenyan nor registered with KMPDC. In Tharaka Nithi County, a Nigerian citizen was treating patients, many of whom died. The minister acknowledged corruption in the Pharmacy and Poisons Board but stated reforms have been implemented.
