Nzimande tables over R10 billion science budget

Minister Blade Nzimande has called for an African-led science and innovation agenda while tabling a budget exceeding R10 billion in Parliament. The funds aim to advance research and development across the continent.

The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation delivered his department’s budget vote today. He stressed that Africa must build a sovereign research agenda designed, funded and led by Africans, supported by fair international partnerships.

Political parties offered mixed reactions. Lusizo Makhubele, chairperson of the Portfolio Committee, described the budget as essential for turning South Africa into a producer of innovation rather than a consumer of imports. Other MPs raised concerns about youth unemployment and limited resources for innovation institutions.

Nzimande announced that the first installment of the National Science Month will launch on 4 July. The department’s 2026/27 roadmap focuses on artificial intelligence, the green economy and national resilience.
