More than 2,500 people marched this midday in Santa María de Cayón against Nestlé's ERE plan that includes 49 layoffs at the La Penilla plant.
The march started at the Sarón football field and reached the factory after nearly two hours. Participants carried a banner reading 'No a los despidos en Nestlé' and chanted slogans such as 'La Penilla no se vende. La Penilla se defiende'.
Upon arrival at the plant, worker representatives read a manifesto. They stressed that '120 años de historia no se borran con una firma' and noted that entire generations have contributed effort and knowledge to the factory.
The protesters demanded involvement from authorities to protect jobs and announced further stoppages on May 27 and 28, ahead of an indefinite strike set for June 1.
