WSU regents approve $20 million investment in athletics for 2027

The Washington State University Board of Regents has voted to allocate $20 million from university operating funds to support WSU Athletics in the 2027 fiscal year. This one-time investment aims to address a projected budget shortfall and stabilize operations. The decision marks a shift from earlier statements indicating no such support was possible due to budget constraints.

During a board meeting in Vancouver on Friday, the Washington State Regents voted 8-1 to direct a one-time $20 million investment in WSU Athletics from university operating funds for the fiscal year 2027, starting July 1. The resolution was discussed at length in committee meetings the previous day and applies solely to FY27.

Board Chair Jenette Ramos emphasized the opportunity during Thursday's committee discussion, stating, "We have an amazing moment in FY27 to approach the new Pac-12 with a winning mindset, a winning team, a new team, and I think of this not as a cliff, but as a moment to invest and to bet on athletics."

Just last month, WSU President Betsy Cantwell told Cougfan.com that institutional support for athletics was not feasible amid university-wide budget constraints. However, circumstances changed rapidly, leading to this approval.

In a message to faculty and staff, Cantwell explained the board's recognition that a strong athletics program drives student recruitment, retention, and institutional pride. She noted, "This action reflects the Board's recognition that a strong Athletics program is one of the main drivers of student recruitment, retention, and institutional pride. It strengthens WSU's visibility, affinity and reputation while fully supporting — and in no way detracting from — WSU's core academic and research mission."

The $20 million will stabilize athletics operations through FY27, allowing time to expand revenue streams and accelerate fundraising. Cantwell outlined upcoming steps, including developing structural budget adjustments, protecting academic priorities, and making long-term decisions. The full FY27 operating budget, including this support, will be presented for approval in May 2026.

Cantwell called on the Cougar community, particularly donors, to invest in WSU Athletics' future to ensure competitiveness and sustainability aligned with academic excellence.
