The Central Organization of Trade Unions has urged employers to end unequal pay for casual and outsourced workers after a court ruling affirmed equal treatment.
Francis Atwoli, the COTU Secretary-General, spoke at a media briefing in Nairobi on June 17. He said some employers pay outsourced staff half the wages of permanent employees doing the same work.
The recent court ruling granted casual and outsourced workers the right to join unions and receive equal pay. The judge found that differing benefits violated the Constitution and labour laws.
Atwoli described the decision as a milestone for industrial relations. The ruling requires employers to stop using outsourcing to avoid obligations under Kenyan labour laws.
