After a disappointing finish at last week's Arnold Palmer Invitational, Justin Thomas rebounded with a 4-under 68 in the opening round of The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass. The two-time major winner, returning from spinal surgery, finished one shot behind leader Maverick McNealy. Thomas described the performance as a much-needed confidence boost amid ongoing mental challenges.
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Justin Thomas' return to competitive golf has been marked by hurdles, but his opening round at The Players Championship offered a glimpse of progress. Following a last-place finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, where he missed the cut with scores over 80 in both rounds and ended 14 over par, Thomas arrived at TPC Sawgrass seeking stability.
Thomas shot 4-under 68 on Thursday, placing him one stroke off the lead set by Maverick McNealy. Starting on the back nine, he birdied his first three holes but dropped shots at 17 and 18. He steadied with a clean stretch and added three birdies in his last five holes, gaining strokes across all facets of his game, particularly with the putter on mid-range efforts from 6 to 15 feet.
The performance came after six months sidelined by spinal surgery, which delayed his season start. At Bay Hill, Thomas struggled mentally, describing himself as 'spacey' and lacking focus, akin to challenges post-rain delay. 'When you post two pretty humiliating scores, it’s hard to give yourself too much grace,' he said.
On Thursday, focus proved elusive at times, but Thomas persevered. 'I felt like it really was just all mental,' he noted, referencing fatigue and distraction. Yet, walking off the ninth green, he felt relief: 'I kind of had a deep breath to myself... I needed that.'
Thomas emphasized building confidence through competition, not just practice. 'A lot of confidence comes from doing it in competition,' he said, comparing it to clutch performances by athletes like Michael Jordan. His goal remains steady progress toward events like the Masters, without expecting immediate contention.
TPC Sawgrass suits Thomas' shotmaking when sharp, rewarding trajectory control over swing mechanics. 'Just feels great to get off to a great start at a big tournament... I always enjoy playing this place,' he added.
