Senator Esteban Velásquez introduced a constitutional reform to enable the Comptroller General of the Republic to oversee state companies such as Codelco.
The initiative follows a May internal audit that detected an overvaluation of nearly 27,000 tons in Codelco’s reported production for 2025. Velásquez, from the FRVS party and representative of the Antofagasta Region, stated that the figures were inflated to pay bonuses to executives and workers. The bill seeks to complement legal and financial reviews with technical audits and operational traceability. The senator noted that Codelco is the main state company and its impact affects national finances. He proposed creating a special unit inside the Comptroller if necessary. The project was already announced in the chamber and referred to the Senate Constitution Commission.
