Texas man pleads to call mom after fleeing traffic stop

A 21-year-old man from Texas begged deputies to let him call his mother after fleeing a traffic stop and crashing his vehicle, authorities said.

Kevin Guerrero was pulled over around 2:05 a.m. Sunday in the 7300 block of Doniphan Drive in Canutillo for an obscured license plate. Body camera footage captured him telling a deputy he was not under the influence before he sped away.

Deputies pursued Guerrero, who abandoned his crashed vehicle in a desert lot and ran on foot while carrying a bag. Officers warned him about being tased before handcuffing him.

Guerrero repeatedly asked to call his mom during the arrest. He faces charges of evading arrest or detention with a vehicle, evading arrest or detention, and unlawful carrying of a weapon, with bond set at $37,500.

El Paso County Sheriff Oscar Ugarte announced the charges on Wednesday.
