A debt collector was killed and another seriously injured in an assault in Kalibata, South Jakarta, on Thursday (December 11, 2025). The incident began when two debt collectors stopped a motorcyclist, prompting intervention from a car driver and his group. A crowd retaliated by burning kiosks and vehicles nearby.
The clash in Kalibata, South Jakarta, unfolded on Thursday (December 11, 2025) around 3:30 PM WIB. According to Pancoran Police Chief, Commissioner Mansur, the incident started when two debt collectors, known as mata elang or DC, stopped a motorcyclist in front of Kalibata Public Cemetery. "It began when a motorcyclist was passing by and was stopped by the DC and their friends. Then suddenly, a car driver behind helped the motorcyclist. The car driver immediately punched the DC members. About 4-5 people from the car group, traveling in the same direction as the motorcyclist," Mansur stated.
Mansur clarified that no debt collection process was underway at the time. "According to witness statements at the scene, it seems that didn't happen; they were just suddenly stopped," he said. The assault was carried out with bare hands, without sharp weapons or gunfire, and did not involve rogue military personnel. One debt collector died at the scene, while the other suffered serious injuries to the head and hand and is receiving hospital treatment.
The death prompted another group to arrive and launch a retaliatory attack. The crowd set fire to several merchant kiosks and vehicles, including motorcycles, nearby. "Because one DC member died and the other is injured and treated at the hospital, there might be a sense of injustice. The impact hit the local environment that had no involvement, as the incident was on the road, and according to witnesses, it was just spontaneity," Mansur explained. Firefighters extinguished the fires at multiple points. Police are still investigating the origin of the crowd responsible for the arson.
