Jordan Isaac Carmi, 31, has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and related charges after accidentally shooting his friend Tony Young, 30, during an argument in Des Moines, Iowa, on New Year's Day 2026.
Carmi was sentenced to 20 years in prison and ordered to pay $150,000 in restitution to Young's estate, according to the Polk County Attorney's Office. Prosecutors said the two men had been celebrating at downtown bars before an argument outside Carmi's apartment in the 300 block of Court Avenue.
Carmi told the court he retrieved a gun after others refused to leave his apartment. He described debating with Young about pursuing the group and said he thought pointing the weapon would end the discussion. "I was drunk and high and handling a loaded weapon, which was incredibly stupid," Carmi stated.
The gun discharged, striking Young. Carmi initially faced first-degree murder charges before agreeing to the reduced plea. He expressed remorse, telling District Judge Samantha Gronewald, "I need everyone to understand in no uncertain terms that Tony did not deserve what happened to him."
Young, who had moved from Canada to Iowa, left behind a son. Carmi had a prior drug conviction from Utah a decade earlier.
