Minnesota teen charged in hammer killing of mother

A 17-year-old girl in Minnesota has been charged with second-degree murder after allegedly beating her mother to death with a hammer. The victim was found dead in her apartment on June 26.

Ramsey County prosecutors filed charges against the teenager in the death of her 43-year-old mother, Georgina Lee Monk. Police responded to the Maplewood apartment after staff at the girl's day treatment program reported her request for a welfare check due to feelings of regret.

Officers discovered Monk in bed with multiple blunt-force injuries to her head and upper body. She used a wheelchair because of diabetes and a foot infection. The apartment manager and neighbors described ongoing conflicts between mother and daughter, including a heated argument the night before the killing.

Surveillance footage showed the girl leaving the building early on June 26 with a garbage bag and later carrying a hammer. During questioning, she admitted striking her mother twice and said the act was not entirely planned. The teen remains in custody.
