Disney’s live-action adaptation of Moana reached theaters this weekend with a focus on authentic Polynesian representation. Cast and creatives emphasized close collaboration with cultural experts to honor traditions.
Dwayne Johnson highlighted the significance of seeing Polynesian stories on screen. He recalled lacking similar representation as a child watching films like Indiana Jones.
The production involved extensive input from the Cultural Trust. Experts including Dr. Grant Muāgututiʻa, Tiana Nonosina Liufau, and Opetaia Foaʻi ensured details such as Tā moko tattoos, traditional dances like Siva Samoa, and Samoan language pronunciation reflected real practices.
Liufau incorporated movements from multiple Pacific Islands into the choreography. Muāgututiʻa stressed accurate village interactions and elder respect so audiences would recognize their culture.
At the Hollywood Bowl premiere, a Polynesian dance troupe performed. Cast members including Frankie Adams and Tui expressed pride in the project’s connection to their heritage.
