Indian Railways has reported that more than 87 percent of reserved train tickets are now booked online through IRCTC. This surge reflects ongoing modernization efforts amid some user complaints. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared these details in a Lok Sabha reply on December 3, 2025.
Indian Railways has made significant strides in digital ticketing, with e-ticketing now comprising over 87 percent of all reserved tickets. This development was highlighted by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in a written response to the Lok Sabha on December 3, 2025.
Vaishnaw noted the preference for online bookings over traditional PRS counters at stations, attributing the growth to simplified processes. "The share of e-ticketing has since increased to more than 87% of total reserved tickets booked on Indian Railways. However, some complaints are received regarding failed transaction/delayed refund/booking errors which are being monitored on a regular basis for quick resolution," he stated.
To support this shift, Indian Railways has implemented various security and efficiency measures. These include deactivating suspicious user IDs, reporting fraudulent PNRs to the National Cyber Crime Portal, and revalidating accounts. Enhanced validations, advanced content delivery networks, and anti-BOT technologies ensure a secure experience for users.
The IRCTC platform operates on API-based technology, minimizing data exchange for better performance, even in rural areas. It also employs a global Content Delivery Network to deliver content quickly and reliably. The Ministry of Railways conducts regular third-party audits of IRCTC's infrastructure to drive improvements.
Ongoing capacity enhancements and technological upgrades continue, depending on resources and feasibility. These efforts aim to handle the surge in online bookings while addressing occasional issues like transaction failures.
