Authorities believe two ransom notes sent to the family of Nancy Guthrie were likely from her abductors. One demanded millions in Bitcoin while the second indicated she had died.
Investigators familiar with the case say both notes were probably sent by the same person or group from the same computer IP address. The first note arrived on Feb. 2, one day after the 84-year-old was reported missing from her home in Tucson, Arizona. It included specific details about her residence and was addressed to her daughter Savannah Guthrie.
The second note followed on Feb. 6. It revealed that Nancy Guthrie had died and stated the abductors did not intend for that outcome. Neither note has led to her recovery.
Savannah Guthrie told NBC in March that the family believes the two notes are authentic. In an Instagram video after the second note, she and her siblings addressed the kidnappers directly, saying they understood the message and would pay.
A task force of FBI agents and Pima County detectives continues to investigate the kidnapping.
