Rivian introduces R2 SUV with AI features to challenge Tesla

Rivian has unveiled details of its upcoming R2 electric SUV, priced starting at $45,000, featuring advanced AI capabilities like Universal Hands-Free to compete with Tesla's Full Self-Driving. The R2 offers over 300 miles of range and strong off-road performance, positioning it as a more versatile alternative to the Tesla Model Y. Production is set to begin in 2026, with a full reveal on March 12.

Rivian's R2 aims to expand the company's reach in the electric SUV market by offering competitive pricing and technology. Starting at around $45,000, it undercuts the Tesla Model Y Long Range's $48,000 price. The R2 features an 87.4kWh battery providing more than 300 miles of range, charging from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes. It delivers 656 horsepower and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds, outperforming the Model Y's 425 horsepower and 4.6-second sprint.

The R2 emphasizes off-road capabilities with 9.8 inches of ground clearance and all-terrain drive modes, contrasting the Model Y's more commuter-focused design. Its boxy shape provides ample interior space, including dual gloveboxes, fold-flat seats, and larger cargo areas compared to the Model Y. The interior includes a driver's display, central screen, and haptic scroll wheels, avoiding the Model Y's large touchscreen that some critics find distracting.

Central to the R2 is Rivian's new AI, part of the Autonomy+ subscription. Universal Hands-Free (UHF) expands coverage to 3.5 million miles of North American roads, working on any road with painted lines, similar to Tesla's Full Self-Driving. UHF uses neural networks to handle situations like poor lane lines or intersections, as explained by a Rivian spokesperson: “The current UHF model uses a neural network to define a virtual lane center, which is very useful in situations with poor lane lines or intersections."

Unlike Tesla's camera-only approach, Rivian employs cameras, radar, and LiDAR for enhanced perception, especially in adverse weather. UHF rolled out in December 2025 for Gen 2 R1 vehicles and will integrate into future R2 models. It costs $49.99 per month or $2,500 one-time. Rivian plans point-to-point navigation later in 2026 and eyes-off driving beyond that, targeting Level 4 autonomy. CEO RJ Scaringe stated: "The next major step beyond point to point will be eyes off—meaning you can navigate point to point with your hands off the wheel and your eyes off the road. This gives you your time back."

Analyst Stephanie Brinley noted: “Rivian’s [AI] is not simply about catching up with Tesla. It is about developing technology which might create a deeper shift into how people interact with vehicles and what they expect of personal transportation.” The R2's full introduction is scheduled for March 12, 2026.

Tesla is developing a new compact electric SUV priced below the $36,990 Model 3 and measuring 168 inches (4.3 meters) long—shorter than the Model 3 (185.8 inches) and Model Y (188.7 inches)—according to Reuters citing four anonymous supplier sources. The all-new design awaits CEO Elon Musk's production approval and may launch first in China before expanding to U.S. and German factories, signaling a pivot back to core vehicles after a focus on robotaxis and humanoid robots.

Rivian plans to introduce supervised point-to-point autonomous driving later this year on its second-generation vehicles. The feature aims to match capabilities similar to those offered by Tesla.
