DepEd orders faster build of disaster-resilient classrooms

Education Secretary Sonny Angara has ordered faster construction of disaster-resilient classrooms to keep learning going when schools serve as evacuation centers during calamities.

The Department of Education said up to 878 learning continuity spaces are under construction, with 34 already completed. This includes 453 classrooms being built and 391 in the procurement stage.

The agency is also expanding procurement of two buildings with five classrooms each at Romana C. Acharon Elementary School and H.N. Cahilsot Central Elementary School in General Santos City, with completion targeted this month.

A separate P226.4 million budget has been allocated for 109 ready-to-assemble classrooms across seven regions, 83 of them in the Davao Region. These semi-permanent modular classrooms can be installed within four to eight weeks.
