Eight injured in gas explosion at Sants metro works

A gas explosion from a leak during accessibility works at Plaça de Sants metro station in Barcelona has injured eight men, two of them seriously.

The incident took place on July 22, 2026, around 22:50. Workers detected a gas leak at 14:40 from a pipe damaged during L5 line accessibility works. Nine Barcelona firefighter units responded along with gas company staff.

Eight male workers were injured: two serious and two less serious cases were taken to Hospital Vall d'Hebron; one less serious and three minor cases went to Hospital Clínic. The blast triggered a fire that remained active hours later.

Clara Latorre, on-duty chief of Barcelona firefighters, stated: “The flow of gas will not stop until the work to control the leak is completed. Until we manage to stop the gas we cannot extinguish the flame.” The PROCICAT pre-alert was activated and traffic was cut off. Metro closed only the Galileo Street access while Lines 1 and 5 continued operating. An investigation has been opened.
