According to Spanish media, an initial police investigation indicates the man was likely recruited by a drug smuggling network. There is evidence suggesting he had made several trips as a drug courier to various cities.

Sweden’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs confirms that a man of the same age was detained in Spain in June. The man is receiving consular support from the embassy in Madrid.
