Färjestad BK has dismissed Jörgen Jönsson as head coach, just nine months into a four-year contract. The decision comes amid a disappointing season where the team sits seventh in the SHL. Assistant coach Christer Olsson takes over, with the club aiming to unlock its potential.
Färjestad BK announced on Friday evening that Jörgen Jönsson has been relieved of his duties as head coach, despite signing a four-year deal in the summer. The move follows a string of poor results, including four consecutive losses leading into Saturday's home game against Djurgården. The team currently holds seventh place in the SHL table, 12 points behind fifth-placed Malmö and reportedly 30 points off the league leaders after two-thirds of the regular season.
Sport director Rickard Wallin justified the change, stating, "I have the utmost respect for Jörgen Jönsson. But we are in a results-based business, and where we now see it as necessary to make changes for the team's best." He added that the club believes the squad has the potential to perform much higher both in standings and on the ice. New head coach Christer Olsson expressed humility in taking the role: "I take on the task with great humility and have full focus on the team. We will continue to build on the strength in this group and work hard to take the next step."
Olsson is joined by Ole-Kristian Tollefsen, who moves up from the J20 team as assistant coach, while Mikael Karlberg, Daniel Hansen, and Erik Granqvist remain on the staff. Jönsson, a club icon with five SHL titles as a player and three as a leader at Färjestad, had returned to Karlstad after struggling at Växjö. However, the team's offensive output has faltered, with stars underperforming and defense and goalkeeping inconsistent after early improvements.
Panelists at HockeyNews reacted with surprise. Mattias Ek called it "omskakande," noting the deal seemed "too good to be true" given the contract length and Jönsson's legacy. Andreas Hanson agreed the high expectations in Färjestad made seventh place unacceptable after 34 matches. Linnéa Andersson deemed it the right call, highlighting unanswered questions in the season's performance.
