Political parties in Mora avoid discussing village school closures ahead of this autumn's municipal election. The issue is relevant due to declining numbers of children in Dalarna.
Almost all municipalities in Dalarna struggle with low birth rates. The region stands at 1.5 children per woman compared to 2.1 needed to keep the population constant.
Pär-Johan Jönsson (C), chair of the preschool and compulsory school board in Mora municipality, says closing village schools is nothing one dreams of doing. Last winter, the Social Democrats voted no to a closure proposal for the schools in Vika and Nusnäs.
Anna Bength (S), opposition councillor, states that the future of the schools is more about the quality of education than about each individual school. She does not want to promise to save the village schools.
Marina Back, a parent in Vika, says the school means security for her children and that a closure decision would affect where the family chooses to live.
