GTA 6 physical copies in Japan will expire after 170 days

Physical copies of Grand Theft Auto 6 sold in Japan will contain a single code that expires 170 days after the game's November 19 release. Rockstar Games updated its support page to confirm the deadline falls on May 8, 2027. The rule stems from Japan's Payment Services Act on prepaid codes.

The code grants access to the full game and any pre-order bonuses. Retail copies without pre-order include the code but omit the cosmetic pack. No physical disc version exists for any edition.

Rockstar stated the 170-day limit complies with local regulations that allow companies to avoid depositing half the value of prepaid items with the Japan Legal Affairs Bureau. Similar restrictions apply to other regions for PlayStation 5 codes, while Xbox codes remain redeemable worldwide.

Dan Houser and Lazlow Jones, former Rockstar staff now at Absurd Ventures, commented on the broader physical versus digital debate at San Diego Comic-Con. Houser said companies should provide physical options if fans want them, while noting digital updates improve game quality.
