The game took place at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, where Kentucky trailed 32-25 at halftime after a sluggish first half marked by missed shots and turnovers. St. John's, coached by Rick Pitino—a former Kentucky mentor to Pope—built a double-digit lead early, but the Wildcats mounted a decisive comeback in the second half.
Kentucky opened the period with a 14-0 run, sparked by baskets from Malachi Moreno, Otega Oweh, Quaintance, and Jaland Lowe, to take a 52-43 lead. The bench proved crucial, outscoring St. John's 40-10 overall. Oweh led with 20 points, five rebounds, and three steals, while Lowe added 13 points and three assists despite a scary shoulder injury scare just seconds into his playing time.
Quaintance, a projected lottery pick in the 2026 NBA Draft who transferred from Arizona State, logged 18 minutes in his first action since ACL surgery in March. "This has been a long time in the making," Quaintance said. "I've been a competitor my whole life." His putback dunks energized the team and fans.
Lowe, who dislocated his shoulder twice earlier this season, briefly left the court but returned to make key plays. Pitino praised him postgame, saying, "They're a totally different basketball team when he's on the court," comparing his pick-and-roll skills to Hall of Famer Nate 'Tiny' Archibald.
Pope reflected on the growth: "It's just been slow for us to grow up and embrace who exactly we are." The victory provides momentum before SEC play begins January 3 against No. 16 Alabama. Kentucky hosts Bellarmine on December 23.
