Majority unions call off education strikes in Catalonia after deal with government

Unions USTEC and Professors de Secundària have called off strikes planned for Monday to Thursday in Catalonia, while teachers vote on ratifying the preliminary agreement reached with the government on Friday.

The preliminary agreement includes a salary increase of up to 600 euros per month by 2029, with a new autonomous complement of 170 euros, more than 6,300 positions for inclusive education and 5,000 secondary chairs. The consultation will run from Monday to Thursday and the June 5 strike remains scheduled pending the outcome.

President Salvador Illa has described the pact as “historic” and highlighted the unions’ willingness to engage in dialogue. Counselor Esther Niubó stated it will place Catalonia in third or fourth position in state remuneration.

Minority unions CGT and Intersindical maintain the strikes and recommend voting 'no', arguing the deal leaves out key demands. The government invests 2.726 billion euros over four years to resolve the three-month conflict.
