New party proposes e-scooter firms cover healthcare costs

Injuries from e-scooter accidents in Uppsala County have nearly tripled in a year. Liberalt Initiativ wants rental companies to share healthcare costs.

In Uppsala County the number of injured rose from 124 to 356 people in the past year. Nationally more than 6 600 people were injured and seven died in e-scooter accidents between 2024 and 2025 according to Transportstyrelsen.

The newly formed party Liberalt Initiativ proposes that the companies should contribute to healthcare costs. Party leader Malin Sjöberg Högrell says the idea is to prompt firms to take more safety measures.

Regional councillor Unn Harsem of the Centre Party rejects the proposal. She argues it would create new problems and instead calls for education and better traffic habits.

SVT Uppsala contacted the rental firms under contract with the municipality but received no response.
