Philippines pushes for stronger ASEAN police cooperation against transnational crime

The Philippines is pushing for closer cooperation among ASEAN police forces to combat transnational crimes, officials said during a recent gathering.

At a meet-and-greet of ASEANAPOL police chiefs last Thursday at Malacañang, Marcos administration officials expressed support for stronger law enforcement cooperation. Philippine National Police chief Gen. Jose Nartatez Jr. said, "Regional security is strengthened when law enforcement agencies build lasting partnerships founded on trust, professionalism and a common commitment to protect our people."

Executive Secretary Ralph Recto highlighted the responsibility of police chiefs and the need for sustained regional cooperation against cybercrime, drug trafficking and other organized crimes. The 44th ASEANAPOL Conference ran from July 22 to 26 at the Manila Marriott Hotel in Pasay.

School violence was also discussed, with the PNP and counterparts pushing for stronger laws. Nartatez said the force is studying Australia’s law banning social media use for youths under 16.
