Philippines receives 21,000 metric tons of LPG from United States

The Philippines has received a shipment of 21,000 metric tons of liquefied petroleum gas from the United States to support energy supply during a national emergency. The cargo arrived on May 30 and forms part of government efforts to stabilize fuel reserves.

The Philippine National Oil Company confirmed the delivery in a statement. The LPG, consisting of equal parts refrigerated propane and butane, originated from Enterprise Port in Texas. It was procured through Trafigura Pte. Ltd. on April 13 and stored at the South Pacific Inc. Terminal in Calaca, Batangas.

The shipment supports the Department of Energy’s Emergency Energy Security Program. PNOC coordinated operational requirements and safety standards ahead of arrival. The fuel will help maintain inventory levels and address potential supply issues in key areas.

PNOC senior vice president Graciela Barleta stated that the delivery shows concrete actions by the DOE and PNOC to strengthen fuel reserves and ensure continuous LPG availability during the ongoing national energy emergency.

A total of 425 out of 14,485 gas stations nationwide were temporarily closed as of March 27 due to the fuel crisis triggered by the Iran war, according to the Philippine National Police. The Cordillera Administrative Region recorded the highest number at 79, while President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared a national energy emergency.

Following the first 142,000-barrel shipment that arrived on March 26, the Philippine government has secured a total of 1.04 million barrels of diesel to bolster the country's fuel buffer amid the global oil crisis. The remaining 900,000 barrels are expected next month, helping maintain stocks above minimum levels during the energy emergency.

The Department of Energy (DOE) announced the arrival of 142,000 barrels of diesel in Luzon on Thursday, March 26, 2026, as the first delivery under the Emergency Energy Security Program. Energy Secretary Sharon Garin described it as the result of government efforts to bolster fuel supplies. However, calculations based on DOE data indicate it covers less than one day's diesel demand.

In response to ongoing fuel price volatility from Middle East tensions and global oil surges, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. issued Executive Order No. 114 on April 16, 2026, suspending excise taxes on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and kerosene for three months to ease burdens on Filipino households, following economic managers' defense of targeted relief.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. urged Southeast Asian nations to activate and test their fuel-sharing pact, citing vulnerabilities exposed by the Middle East conflict for import-dependent economies. The Department of Energy said another round of fuel rollbacks remains possible next week, though officials cautioned against assuming the downtrend will hold amid global oil market volatility. DOE also ordered fuel firms to report storage capacities to prepare for disruptions.
