Philz Coffee opens first San Leandro location

Third-wave coffee chain Philz is launching its first shop in San Leandro, California, with pour-over brews and custom murals. The new outlet will soft-open next week before a grand opening on March 18. It features a modern design and seasonal drink specials.

Philz Coffee, a specialist in third-wave coffee, is expanding to San Leandro with its first location in the city. The shop, situated at 1194 E. 14th St. in the newly constructed Centro Callan apartment community, occupies a 2,500-square-foot space along the East 14th Street corridor. It offers seating for 43 customers in a midcentury-modern interior with high ceilings.

Baristas will begin preparing pour-over coffees and the popular Mint Mojito drink using freshly roasted beans during soft-opening hours from 8 a.m. to noon on Monday, March 16, and Tuesday, March 17. The grand opening follows on Wednesday, March 18, with regular business hours set from 5:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

A key feature is a mural commissioned from Bay Area artist Nigel Sussman, which illustrates San Leandro's history, including its agricultural roots like cherry orchards and a former raceway. Another mural highlights Philz's brewing philosophy of 'one cup at a time.' Seasonal menu items available at this and other locations include Pistachio Spice and Cashew Cocoa beverages.

Founded by Phil Jaber, who started blending beans decades ago, Philz opened its first San Francisco shop in 2003. The company now operates 82 locations nationwide. This San Leandro outlet marks the second Philz in the mid-Alameda County area, following one in Castro Valley.
