President Marcos urges maritime graduates to uphold reputation

President Marcos told graduates of the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy to maintain the reputation of Filipino seafarers as trusted mariners worldwide. He spoke at the commencement for the Salighirang Class of 2026 in San Narciso, Zambales. Marcos also pledged to improve maritime training and protect seafarers in conflict zones.

President Marcos addressed the graduates yesterday during the PMMA commencement exercises. He said the 327 midshipmen would soon join other Filipino seafarers who have earned international trust through competence and professionalism.

Marcos stated that the reputation must be earned by each generation. He explained that the class name Salighirang combines words meaning trust and chosen, symbolizing guidance and role models.

The batch included 146 students in marine transportation and 181 in marine engineering. Midshipman First Class Mark Owen Trilles from Tigaon, Camarines Sur, served as valedictorian.

Marcos noted past challenges to Philippine maritime standards that affected about 50,000 seafarers on European Union vessels. He said the government responded by upgrading education, certification, and facilities. He added that officials would continue to prioritize the safety of sailors in areas such as the Middle East.
