The ruling Democratic Party and main opposition People Power Party agreed on June 16 to launch a 45-day parliamentary investigation into ballot shortages during the June 3 local elections.
The two parties reached the agreement during a meeting of their deputy floor leaders at the National Assembly on June 16. The plan will be put to a vote at a parliamentary plenary session on Thursday. The special committee will be chaired by the People Power Party.
The investigation will examine the National Election Commission's management failures that led to temporary suspensions of voting at multiple polling stations due to ballot shortages. Both parties aim to establish the facts behind the election administration issues.
The parliamentary probe proceeds separately from election petitions filed after the vote. Calls have also emerged to respect legal procedures in addressing the matter.
