Sweden's emissions fell three percent in 2025

Naturvårdsverket reports that Sweden's climate emissions fell three percent in 2025 compared with 2024. The drop is still not enough to meet climate targets.

Emissions totaled 46.7 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalents in 2025. That represents a reduction of 1.3 million tons from the previous year.

The largest drop occurred in domestic transport and work machines. It was mainly due to the reintroduced reduction obligation.

Stefan Nyström, head of the climate and air division, says current policy instruments are insufficient. He stresses that measures need to be introduced quickly, especially in the transport sector.

Sweden is also not expected to meet its commitments under the EU Effort Sharing Regulation. The agency projects a shortfall of 13.1 million tons by 2030.
