A Texas man was convicted this week for his role in the June 2025 death of his two-month-old son. The jury found Miguel Angel Ortiz Jr. guilty of injury to a child by omission and recommended a 30-year prison sentence.
Ortiz, 38, was convicted Tuesday in Hidalgo County on the single charge. He was acquitted of capital murder of a person under 10, murder, injury to a child, and aggravated assault of a family member.
Sentencing had been set for Thursday but was delayed until next week. The judge will determine the final term.
The case began after a wellness check at a home in Pharr, Texas, where officers found the child dead. An autopsy showed bruising and signs of decomposition. The child's mother, Karina Aidee Ramirez, 35, faces separate charges including capital murder.
