Tougher competition for summer jobs in Dalarna

Competition for summer jobs has increased in Dalarna this year due to more adult job seekers. Over 1000 summer jobs remain available in the region.

Maja Erlbacher at the Public Employment Service in Borlänge says young people must search more broadly both professionally and geographically.

In Borlänge 640 people applied for 220 municipal summer jobs. In Falun the number of jobs was increased to 233 after last year's record pressure with 857 applicants for 174 positions.

Iris Juujärvi from Mockfjärd, who has had summer jobs since age 14, helps her friends apply for work through the Public Employment Service.

Therese Ställberg at Falu municipality describes last summer as a wake-up call that led to more positions this year.

Applications to Dalarna University have risen by more than 13 percent, intensifying competition for the same number of spots. A record 424,113 Swedes have applied for higher education this autumn, according to the Swedish Council for Higher Education. Vice rector Jonas Tosteby states the university cannot admit more students.

SVT's mapping reveals that the population in Dalarna county will decrease by 9,236 people from 2024 to 2040, based on SCB figures. Only a few municipalities are projected to see stable or slight growth. The largest declines are expected in places like Ludvika and Borlänge.
