Tropical storm Hagupit set to enter Philippine area of responsibility

Tropical Storm Hagupit is expected to enter the Philippine area of responsibility on Saturday and will be locally named Caloy. The state weather bureau said the storm has a high chance of weakening once it reaches the Philippine Sea.

Tropical Storm Hagupit was last tracked moving westward at 20 kilometers per hour. It was located between 1,165 and 1,385 kilometers east of Mindanao with maximum winds of 75 to 85 kph.

Pagasa specialist Loriedin de la Cruz-Galicia said there is a high chance the storm will weaken into a low pressure area by Wednesday, May 13. It is not expected to make landfall.

The Philippine National Police has readied equipment and deployment plans for possible preemptive evacuations in affected areas. Easterlies will bring scattered rains and thunderstorms to parts of Mindanao and the Visayas.
